Welcome,

Below, and on the next several pages, you will find the creative works of students in the Dartmouth College Film Studies 7 Freshman Seminar taught by Professor David G. Ehrlich. As students studied some of the greatest creative minds of history through films, they discovered their own creative processes and their own talents. The writing, music, and art on this site is completely original and the product of the students, and their hard labor.

Thank you and sincerely,

The Students of Film Studies 7, Fall 2009

Snowshoe Hare

By Sarah Cashdollar

During winter’s cold light, there
Frets a creature that
Shivers on crisp, clean ice,
Shrouding itself with the pristine flakes to
Obscure its like tinted cover;

Trembling not from the
Frosty chill of
Night’s coming mistrals, but
From a more chilling presage
Of the snow destined to

Melt to an alloy of mud;
Brown soil, blighting its benefactor,
Mucking ambrosia with earth,
And making all endowed to it blend.

Two Pipe Cleaners

By Bob Huang

Chained Necklace: Hi

Love Zipper: Hi

You seem rather constricted

Are you okay?

Chained Necklace:  Yes, I’m okay… I’ve felt this way my whole life, so I’m accustomed to it by now.

Love Zipper:  Oh my

Why is it that you’ve felt this way?

Chained Necklace: When I was younger, my parents were always strict. I learned to live life “by the rules” and now I’m not sure how to live any other way. Isn’t it scary to be so free?

Love Zipper:  Heck, no.

Freedom is like flying into outer space with wings.

Chained Necklace  Wow!

Love Zipper:  You may not know where the asteroids will come, but it will be a fun joy ride all the way through.

Sure, you might get some bumps and bruises along the way, but they’re all worth it.

Chained Necklace  That sounds amazing… but I like having certainty in my life. Even if it means sacrificing some joy, at least I know I’m safe with my routine.

But sometimes I wish I could let go a little and experience life… to break free from my restraints.

Love Zipper:  Psh, certainty is overrated in every way possible! Sure, you might know where your next meal comes from, but that takes away the excitement that comes when you’re pleasantly surprised and realize that you won a year’s worth of ramen by jumping off a cliff.

Chained Necklace  But what happens if your plate is empty?

If you’re forced to starve?

What then?

Love Zipper:  Good question. And there’s a simple answer: I’ll make do.

It’s not hard to eek by with some bread on the table.

Artists do it all the time. The trick is just to find a passion that makes bare substenance bearable.

Chained Necklace  I suppose, but it still seems like too much of a risk.

Aren’t you ever afraid that one day bread won’t be enough?

Don’t you ever wish for more? For stability?

Love Zipper:  Nope. I know that I love my passion for music enough so that I can live on it forever! Besides, if you spend your entire present worrying about your future, by the time that future comes, you will have wasted your entire life. You look really chained and weary, so please, trust me and just loosen up and enjoy freedom for a bit. You won’t regret it.

Chained Necklace  The thought crosses my mind frequently… what if I break free from my constraints? It’s exciting and terrifying to ponder.

I worry that I will fall to pieces…

but then again, it’s my only chance to really “live.”

Love Zipper:  Don’t worry. If you fall to pieces, I will pick them up and put you back together piece by piece. Here, let me unchain you right now

Chained Necklace  I feel… so much lighter

I can move!

I can dance!

This is amazing!

Love Zipper:  I told you so! WOOPIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Chained Necklace  YAY!
